Double-tracking rail project to cost RM23b
The Gemas-Padang Besar electrified double-tracking rail project will cost RM22.93 billion and is expected to be completed in 2012, Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
He said of the total, RM3.45 billion was for the construction of tracks on the Gemas-Seremban section.
The rest are for Seremban-Rawang (RM1.5 billion), Rawang-Ipoh (RM5.5 billion) and Ipoh-Padang Besar (RM12.485 bilion).
"The project will ease traffic congestion between the towns," he said when winding up the Ninth Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review debate for the ministry.
To a question by Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) on whether the ministry had carried out a study following claims that the project was not beneficial to the people, Ong said there was no truth to the claims.
"The project is not only to cater for the commuters' needs but also in the handling of cargo," he said.
Replying to Dr Tan Seng Giaw (DAP-Kepong) on KTM commuter services, Ong said studies showed that 93.17 per cent of train services arrived at stations not later than 15 minutes behind schedule.
He said only 3.97 per cent of those arrivals were between 15 and 30 minutes late while 0.46 per cent were between 30 and 60 minutes late, and cancellations 2.28 per cent.
Ong said there was still room for improvement and this would be done through adding extra coaches as well as periodic safety audits. ? Bernama

Mestilah rakyat marhaen seperti kebiasaannya..
